The phylogenetic classification of Iguania from this work is the current and most generally accepted classification of iguanid lizards.
Comparison with the hands of modern climbing species with elongated third digits, like iguanid lizards, also supports the tree-climbing hypothesis.
On the basis of morphological data, iguanid lizards were thought to have diverged from other squamates very early on, but recent mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, do not support this.
There is one endemic species of iguanid lizard ( " Urosaurus auriculatus " ) and the land crab " Gecarcinus planatus " which occurs on islands throughout the region.
This classification was revised after later mitochondrial DNA analysis and research into the scalation patterns on the heads of Caribbean iguanid lizards ( these patterns are unique by species and act as a " fingerprint " of sorts ).
